September 29 – What Happened & What Up

September 29, 2019

Another great week of soccer action – a brief report on last week’s games and those upcoming. All scores to date are summarized in the Results ’19 folder.

Reserve

The Reserve team continues to play at a high level, and fought back against some strong competition this past week. Regarding the team’s Wednesday (9/25) game vs. Lebanon, the ever the ever loquacious Coach Alloway’s noted that “The Reserves returned to the friendly confines of Dresden Fields on Wednesday and put on an impressive display against rivals Lebanon winning in convincing fashion 5-0. Hanover looked threatening right from the outset, but Lebanon was equal to the task for the first 20 minutes. Ailia Hedgepath started the onslaught, when she scored from her defensive midfield spot, booting a rocket shot into the upper left hand corner of the net from 30 yards away. A short time later, Rosa Gomez beat the keeper to double the score. Late in the half,  Gomez sent a ball from the left hand corner across the six yard box. A determined River Miles made an amazing 25 yard run to get on the end of it giving the team a comfortable 3-0 lead at the half. Gomez and Miles each scored again in the second half, essentially putting the game out of reach. It was at this point that coach Redpath put on the brakes and switched things around, giving players an opportunity to play different positions. Hanover dominated the midfield thanks in large part to the efforts of Iris Levey(2 assists), MacKenzie Lui(1 assist), Ann Rightmere and tri-captain Hailey Stewart. Freshman Nina Sablan also turned in an excellent shift at striker and in the midfield. When called upon the defense was up to the task with Jordan Ray(1 assist) Rose Luttmer (2 assists), Enna Park, Freddie Tagupa, Bella Johnson and Whitney Ladeau completely shutting down the Lebanon offense. Keeper Lyra  Bornholt-Collins recorded her third clean sheet of the year.

September 22 – We’re Back

September 22, 2019

Our apologies for the gap in soccer coverage – a brief vacation at DHMC and a long catch-up process kept us away from journalistic activities. We’ll be better going forward. All scores to date are summarized in the Results ’19 folder:

Reserve

The Reserve girls are off to a great start and are playing as well as any team in recent seasons. As noted in Coach Alloway’s comments on the season opener vs. Kimball Union Academy, “The Reserves speed, skill and teamwork were on full display Wednesday dominating their hosts 6-0.  Annika Subrahmanian buried a shot into the upper right corner of the net in the sixth minute to get things going.  Later in the period, River Miles blew past several defenders down the left flank and placed a perfect ball into the back of the net making the score 2-0 at halftime. Miles opened the second half with her second goal of the match by pouncing on an errant goal kick, waltzing into the box and calmly beating the goalkeeper. A few minutes later, MacKenzie Lui outworked her opponent on a 50-50 ball and delivered a beautiful pass to Rosa Gomez who smashed the ball into the net from just inside the box. Sarah Hall and Ann Rightmere rounded out the scoring.
KUA’s best scoring opportunity came in the second minute of the match on a free kick. After that initial scare the defense, led by Jordan Ray, Anna Testorf and Freddie Tagupa, kept the hosts away from goalie Lyra Bornholm-Collins who recorded 3 saves posting a clean sheet. Assistant Coach Alloway said ‘Kelsey and I have been especially pleased with the way this group has come together and support one another. The girls are having fun, working hard in training and enjoying their time together. The team is a nice blend of experienced players and talented freshman eager to learn and improve’.
